Questions on a seldom used area in the Pecos Wilderness

by Bubba Suess » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:26 am

I was studying maps of the Pecos Wilderness, looking for some lesser traveled areas that might be interesting to explore on a possible trip out to NM later this year. I found this long ridge at the eastern end of the wilderness that seems to rise close to or above the treeline, has some lakes in deep cirques and seems to have a rather rugged eastern escarpment. With one minor exception, I can't find anything about this area.

Here is the one mention of the area I found.

Here is a map of the area in question. I included Jicarita Peak and Serpent Lake on the map as a reference to where this area is.

Any insight into this area is much appreciated!

I have been wanting to do that ridge for a while now. I have yet to find a trip report of someone doing it. As far as I can tell it is very straight forward, seems strange that it is not done more often. Driving up the road from Mora you can get a good view of it.
Was just up in the area, but did no go very far that direction though. Did go up to The Knob which offers nice views of Jicarita and areas to the east. Amazing how much snow has. melted in the past month.

I read on a forest service site that there was going to be rehabilitation of the defunct Gascon Point Trail, but I do not know from where it originates. I would love to find out more about this area.

At some point I want to go from Jack's Creek up to Trailrider's, summit several of the Truchas's, over to Jicarita and down through Angustora. Maybe in October, but probably next summer. I would say its doable in June, Sept and Oct. I don't want to deal with T-storms; possible depending on snow in May, and Nov.
Would love for the FS to get a good trail system through there.
