Climbing in or around Kathmandu

by JakobFisker » Thu Nov 11, 2010 1:35 pm

I am going to spend two months in and around Kathmandu, and want to hear if there are any places to go bouldering, trad, sport, alpine whatever. I will be off on weekends, and will be there march-april 2011.

Unlucky dude. I hear it's pretty flat over there.

I spent five weeks or so in (but mostly around) there many moons ago and saw nothing. Your best bet would likely be some trekking peaks in the Langtang or near (i.e., before entering) the Annapurna Sanctuary. People have climbed some ice routes in winter, but you'd have to fly into to someplace like Namche Bazaar, etc.

I'd see if you could check some message boards in Kathmandu for more info. There's got to be a place in Thamel with some information. You could also try bugging Elizabeth Hawley. She's debriefed every expedition that come through since the 60's I believe.
