maps on mountain or route pages

by ojo » Tue Nov 16, 2010 8:45 am

What's the best way of producing a map of a route(s) for a mountain or route page? Can I photograph part of a map and then edit it in software (add the route, for eg) without infringing copyright?

Google maps for Access to the trailhead, yes, but.. well, I see some good, clear maps on pages and wonder where they come from. Thanks. j

Hola ojo,

Perhaps there is a mapping software that covers the regions where you climb most frequently.

For the US, I use National Geographic TOPO! software for map-building. I apologize that I have no mapping software to recommend for Spain specifically or EMEA in general.

Good luck!

Sarah

There was a recent article (within a year) on linking in publicly-available European topos. If the area is covered by google maps, you can produce the route as a "track" and upload it.

Maybe here...

Unfortunately, Spain is not explicitly covered in the SP article.

For Spain, there is a great map site :
http://www.ign.es/iberpix/visoriberpix/visorign.html
kind of equivalent to the other one (which was catalunyan :)
There is now a crowd of such map portals in Europe, but so far only 3 of them include the embedding and GPX features: France, UK and ...Slovakia :(
For Spain unfortunately we have only the Google Maps.
To embed a google-mapped route easily you can try http://www.wandermap.net, a great tool.
Otherwise, for more precise maps, you can try a simple JPEG of a portion of the following maps :
http://www.cimbre.com/mapas/pirineos/
But I have no idea of the copyright policy of Spanish editors. Looks like many people do it on the web, much more than with the french IGN... so perhaps you can.

Thanks Visentin. I have a lot to learn. The visoribexpi doesn't open for me, I'll have to try again later. On P3000 it seems folk just use a map and paint on it but I'm sure there's copyright issues though. There are some great maps here: Hoya de Huesca page: http://www.senderoshoyadehuesca.es/visor_buscar.php?id_ruta=1&punto_ruta_x=707830.00000&punto_ruta_y=4688290.00000&nivel_ruta=5&huso=30.
That's what I'd like to achieve.
Thanks again. Back to the drawing board. jane

It looks that the site senderoshoyadehuesca.es (by the way very interesting, thanks), has its own map applet in it, and thus, probably got some authorization from some editor to use this map background. However it doesn't look accessible for public use. I tried to play with the X and Y coordinates passed in the URL, without success.
You can perhaps drom them a mail to ask if and how it can be used.
Have a nice week end !
Eric
