Shasta Conditions

by okworldwide » Thu Feb 03, 2011 12:59 am

Anyone been up Mt. Shasta recently?
Heading up to climb Green Butte Ridge this weekend. With all the warm weather lately just thought I'd see if anyone knows what kind of shape the route is in. Icey? Snow coverage? Are folks still using snowshoes for the approach or is it packed down by now?
Much appreciated!

I climbed Casaval Ride and descended Avalanche Gulch on 1/23. I used snowshoes on the ascent until around 9500' although they might not have been necessary. I didn't really use them on the descent but I was postholing a bit. The upper mountain was very icy from about 11k on. It was especially flaky rotten rime above the Catwalk, on parts of Misery Hill and on the way up the summit block.

Turns out it is very windy and warm but like Telewoman says, it's not over yet!
We attempted Green Butte Ridge on Saturday. Did not need snowshoes for any part of the approach.
But we got shut down by the wind just as we gained the ridge.
Here's a video from Saturday - my friend leaning into the wind there is 6 foot 5 and 250 pounds so should give you an idea of the wind speeds we were up against. I don't know how fast but it was strong. Couldn't continue. Might go back in a couple weeks.

Hey Shane,
Yup that was us. You're lucky to live so near the mountain.
