What kind of pants for Mountaineering?

by Lodewijk » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:43 am

I go climbing in the Alps at least a week every year. Every year a couple of the peaks include the crossing of a glacier and +3500m of altitude.
I used to climb in my snowboard-pants, but I want to buy pants suited for summer alpine climbs. I do not want to spend too much money, preferably not more than 100 euro's.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Softshell, hardshell? Thanks!

I would go with a medium to light weight soft shell, nothing comlicated or fancy.

A lot of people like Patagonia Alpine Guide pants for alpine climbing (including me) but there are many similar pants available from other manufacturers.

Like he said, most manufacturers make something comparable to the Pataguch guide pant.

I have these and like them a lot.

Pants are for women.

Men wear trousers.

Trousers are for the office. Knickers are for climbing. :D

Who wears knickers anymore? I like knickers better than trousers. You can't find knickers anywhere.

True. They are best for climbs involving snow/ice and/or altitude where you may get wet and cold. For pure rock in the summer, something lighter is good.

Pricey but light weight, simple design, and durable, not to mention they will keep you dry: http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN ... ha-SL-Pant

The SLs are Paclite GoreTex if I'm not mistaken, not a soft shell. I have an older version and they are super light but not the most durable pants I've owned. I thought you were going to recommend the Gamma LTs, which I also have. They are a very light softshell and are great for warm conditions.

I'm not sure if they ship overseas, but REI has their Mistral softshell pants on sale now for $59. You can't beat the price...

Alps summer? And even in winter during decent weather with longs under them.

Worth every penny imo. Same pant I am climbing in for the avatar picture..during winter in the Cascades.

Correct on the soft shell issue. The Gamma LTs do look like very nice pants for mountaineering and they are rated as more durable. Both pants get good reviews.
