Scrambles near Lake Ann

by whiteroom17 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:45 pm

hey everyone,

I will be out in Seattle for the first week of August, and I was thinking about camping a few nights at Lake Ann (east of the Mount Baker ski area).

Has anyone been to this area? I am interested in some good class 2/3 scrambles to do. Any suggestions?

There should be some unnamed minor humps in the area, but really at Lake Ann, you are pushed so far up against Mt. Shuksan, that a climb of Shuksan by way of the Fisher Chimneys is the closest thing, and there really aren't any great destination scrambles from Lake Ann. Furthermore, in good weather, Lake Ann is really, really crowded as a popular hiking destination.

There are places other than Lake Ann in the area which would afford much better scrambling opportunities. Just some of the campgrounds down on Highway 542 would permit scrambles of Church Mtn., Excelsior, Tomyhoi, Yellow Aster Butte, and Goat Mountain. Less scenic than camping at Lake Ann, but better objectives.

Thanks for the scrambling suggestions. Mount Ann looks like a great peak to go up, but holy crap that is a lot of snow! Anyone willing to take a guess on whether or not it will be melted off by August 1st?
