Mount Marcy via Panther Gorge

by RyderS » Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:21 am

I might be leading a group of friends on a trip up Mount Marcy this coming weekend. I was wondering if anyone has additional beta on the Panther Gorge, there are a few descriptions of the route online, but I thought I'd cast around on SP for some more advice. The main goal is to tag Marcy, if our plans work out for the better we'll try and tag Haystack, but that's secondary.

Are you going to hike up to 4 corners (Lake Tear)? If so that is straightforward.

I was thinking the Elk Late Trail. Not sure if that's the same thing as hiking up to 4 Corners, though it seems like there are very few alternatives when climbing Marcy from this side. Also, is it possible to take the Panther Gorge Route up and take the Van Hoevenberg trail back to get to your car, or are the trailheads to split up to make that useful? We're limited on time given that we only have a few days for our break. I've heard Elk Lake is a good 3-day hike if you end up doing the traverse of Haystack, Marcy, and Skylight. Is there a possibility of taking on a scramble up the Gorge just to tag Marcy?

Just curious: I've seen some of the photos of the slides on that side of the mountain. Are any of of them scramble-able/climbable?

Check www.adkhighpeaks.com forum for current trail conditions. Panther Gorge had been shut down due to severe storm damage after Irene. Not sure if it has reopened. Trailheads for Elk Lake and Heart Lake (Van Hoevenberg) are on opposite sides of the wilderness area and won't work without a long car shuttle.
