What should I look for when buying goggles?

by mambwe » Fri Oct 21, 2011 7:30 pm

I need to get ski/mountaineering goggles for this winter and I am not sure what to look for. I'm not a skier so I don't need the best pair. I'll be using them on rainier and in winter here in the north east. Any recommendations?

I typically buy what ever is on sale that has an amber lens. I find amber lenses are superior in white out/blizzard conditions to other colors.

Make sure that your goggles

1) leave no exposed skin on your face when worn with your balaclava.

2) are as fog-resistant as possible. This means double-pane construction and plenty of ventilation. (Larger goggles, like the ones designed to go over prescription glasses, are usually better.) (Try your favorite soap/wax coatings too.)

3) Aren't too dark. You'll be wearing them in bad weather.

PS consider getting two pair - if one fogs/ices over, swap it for the other.

Comfort.

And try a pair on and see how the visibility is, looking up or down... not straight ahead.

Yes, yes, yes! Carry a pair of dark sunglasses for bright days; but most people don't realize how dark a "whiteout" can be; have lighter amber goggles for when the sh*t hits the fan. There can be less than 1/100th the normal light intensity when the snow is swirling.

Most goggles are big and bulky.

Uvex Pocket Goggles are compact and fold up small.

I've been using them for years, and I like them.

And they have the correct color of lenses too. Very good find.
