St. Marys Glacier questions

by csmcgranahan » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:06 pm

A friend and I were thinking about heading up to St. Marys Glacier tomorrow to practice for a summer trip to Mt. Rainier. What kind of crowds can I expect and is it an appropriate area for my 3 and 6 year old sons to tag along and sled or just have a snowball fight?

Thanks!

On a warm day you can expect to see anywhere from 10-20 people at or around the glacier. I'm not sure if it would be a good place to sled (less runout to rocks due to drought season) but kids would be ok. It's more of a permanent snowfield (i.e. no crevaces).

There's plenty of parking up there now. I've taken my kids up there since they were able to walk. My youngest loves to climb to the top of Fox Mtn. every single time we go to the glacier. Have fun! Just watch out for all the dog poop....
