Tuolumne Meadows Conditions

by jhigh » Tue May 15, 2012 4:05 am

With the road now open, has anyone been up around Tuolumne Meadows area? Wondering specifically what the snow coverage is like and any potential flooded areas.

just came back from a hike of the grand canyon of the tuolumne sunday night. the meadows are pretty clear, none of the campgrounds or anything are open yet. the meadows have some standing water, but nothing like the lake tuolumne you often see this time of year. snow coverage is mostly limited to north facing aspects, but i hear coverage is 75% or so above 8000 ft. definitely lots of folks day-climbing and some folks still skiing.unicorn saddle looks like it would b perfect for maybe the next 5 minutes....

We hiked Vogelsang Peak last weekend. There's only patchy snow below 9000ft and the average depth at 10k is only a few feet or so. Not enough of a pack to set up the Sierra Cement we know and love; it's all sloshy by the afternoon, you sink all the way through. What's left is melting fast.

Not a single stinking skeeter though!

I uploaded an exhaustive set of photos here:

These should give you an idea:

Fantastic photos! Thanks very much for the info. Good to hear the skeeters aren't out yet.......hopefully they stay gone all summer.

Any updates on skeeters? Heading up later this week to backpack from Tuolumne to the Valley via Clouds Rest and just trying to decide whether I will need a tent or not.

I passed through last Wednesday, 5/30. Near the meadows, at least, the skeeters were definitely coming out. I'd go for the tent.

I agree with QITNL. I was day-hiking in the Mono pass region on Saturday June 2nd and found mosquitoes to be annoying on lunch breaks close to the lake. I would not say they are out in full force, but they are definitely out and about...

+1 for the tent, skeeters were out in about 50% force out of mono meadows last weekend.

Does anyone know how much snow fell near Tioga Pass? Heading up Thursday for some backpacking out of Tuolumne and hoping the road will clear and reopen by then.

Tioga Road reopened this morning.

Most everything that fell in that storm has now melted- tho its much much colder than before the front came through

Mosquitoes are in full effect now, otherwise just another day in paradise!

Dear grammer police, is it "effect" or "affect"? I always forget.

Well to start with it is grammar not grammer. Secondly, it is effect as affect means "to influence". :D

I was up there 2 weeks ago and they were getting pretty bad already and you could tell that another week or two and they would be insane.
