Trail Runners/Light Hikers for Underpronator

by mtvalley » Fri Nov 15, 2013 5:41 am

Any recommendations for a solid trail runner/light hiking shoe for a severe UNDERpronator? My physical therapist says I have damage to the peroneal muscles that's causing my leg to supinate.

I have La Sportiva Wildcats but they have too much medial support I think.

I would use these on the hike into Aconcagua basecamp, probably not too heavy a pack since we'll have mules.

Have you tried strengthening your ankle muscles? I have an old soccer injury on my right leg and the peroneal gets very sore on long hikes -- unless I build it up by doing eversion exercises -- I use 30-40 lbs x 8 reps, using a cable/pulley system attached to a band around the foot -- here's an illustration of the same movement using a resistance band: http://www.personalgym.com/exercises/Foot_Ankle/8.php

Are the peroneal muscles actually damaged, or is the nerve damaged so the muscles have atrophied?

Dr. thought the same about the nerve, but EMG was normal. My right arch is super high, too much hill running over the summer inflamed it. Got a good therapist who's a hiker, he's helped but it still flares up occasionally.

I think I'm gonna test out some other La Sportiva shoes before my trip and see what works.
