Gear for Marcy

by jeffh25 » Fri Sep 12, 2014 1:12 am

I plan on climbing Mount Marcy next Saturday the 20th and wondered if I'd have any use for trekking poles or gaiters? Obviously weather dependent but I've read a few places about the trail being wet. I don't think I'd have much use for either one but better to ask than wish I had brought them. Thanks.

The trails (including the long approach) are fairly rocky and uneven, so some kind of hiking pole can be helpful, especially if you're carrying a heavy pack. The trails can be wet, but you can generally rock-hop through or around the puddles. I wouldn't bother with gaiters (wouldn't do me any good since I wouldn't wear boots) but your style may differ.

Be prepared for another very windy highpoint.

We used ski poles pretty much the whole way.
Then again, we also used skis pretty much the whole way.
I don't think we used gaiters, though.
