ACL ligament decision: cadaver, hamstring or patella

by fourfoot11 » Fri Nov 14, 2014 9:04 pm

So, I recently tore my ACL (slipped on a wet rock while hiking across a creek bed). I'm going to have surgery. But I need to decide on which graft to replace it with. The options are cadaver (allograft), hamstring or patella tendon.

I tore my ACL in my other knee 17 years ago. The surgeon used the patella tendon (tendon under the knee cap). Great use, no problems, except extreme sensitivity to touch on the knee. Only with the past few years has the sensitivity decreased and I can lean on it with comfort.

However, because of that discomfort, I'm leaning toward cadaver or hamstring for the other knee. But I'm not sure how strong it would be as the patella...

I'm primarily a skier, backpacker, runner and occasional mountaineer and also in mountain rescue.

Does anyone have any experience with ACL repair recently and what they chose to go with their particular ligament and why? I figured a bunch of like-minded folks would have some good thoughts and experiences to share.

Thanks!

Um, so NO one on this forum has ever had an ACL replacement? Ever? Anyone?
