I asked for a couple of pictures to assess the difficulty of the pinnacle; to my eye the right hand side of the first photo looks to be more of a scramble than a technical climb. Anyone?

Most of the Trona pinnacles aren't climable by a human. You can walk /scramble on some of the low angle stuff, but the 'rock' isn't solid enough to support a human's weight if its some of the more vertical formations. Put bowls of food and water out and I'll bet the cat will find its way down when it gets hungry enough.

I'm more puzzled as to why someone would bring a pet cat out to that area . . .

The cat owner says "A rock climber help get mondo, my cat, down. Thank you so much!".

Don't know who it was, but kudos to whoever the unselfish person is for lending a hand to someone in need.
