Replacement for Pata Houdini?

by kovarpa » Sun Sep 26, 2010 4:59 pm

Seems like Patagonia stopped making the Houdini. I love mine but after 5 years I may need a replacement. I would buy another one but nobody sells them. What would be a good replacement? It needs to have a hood and full length zipper. Wind resistance is more important than water resistance. The lighter the better. Also prefer bright colors.
Looking at BC.com, seems like Marmot makes Trail Wind and Norrona makes Bithorn Aero 60 and Cloudveil Stash Creek. Marmot is the lightest of the three. Any other product I should consider?
Or I just might keep putting tape on the Houdini and wait for Patagonia to come to its senses and start making the Houdini again...

I bought a Houdini directly from Patagonia during their sale in August. Might be a seasonally available item.

yes, but you start clicking on the links and it is actually out of stock. And I do not want the military green color...

Good news is I heard back from Patagonia in the meanwhile and they will be bringing it back next year - so I am happy to wait.

It's annoying the way Pata do that seasonal thing, especially with items that are used all year round. Maybe they hope by restricting supply you'll buy one of their much more expensive overkill shells?

The Houdini is a good jacket but does not fit me well - too short in the arms and too baggy around the waist. I have a couple Arcteryx Squamish (older pullover style) which are awesome, but also Cloudveil Stash (slippery outer, sizes big), Rab Alpine Pull-On (burlier build, sizes small), Norrona 60 (nice, but no hood volume adjuster, sizes v. small), Paramo Fuera smock (durable, baggy, sizes big) and a couple of others. The Squamish is the best of the lot.

TNF Triumph, my next shell purchase probably. 5.4oz and is real waterproof laminate material.

Montbell makes something almost identical, but they don't do bright colors.

I love Pata stuff, but sometimes their marketing decisions are baffling. They have touted the Houdini quite a bit, including their sponsored athletes, so it is really strange that it would disappear. I have an older Marmot piece that seems almost identical; can't remember the name, but you might want to check into that.

I have an OR Synapse jacket, it's great. Very similar I think, and it's orange!

Kovarpa, call Cadillac Mountain Sports Patagonia store in Bar Harbor - they had few Houdinis left when I was there on Labor Day.
