Snow and mountain conditions in Zermatt area

by John Climber » Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:55 am

Dear SP'ers,

Next week me and some friends are going to try some 4000ers in the Zermatt area. Weissmies, Lagginhorn, Breithorn traverse, Dent Blanche and Matternhorn are some of the possible targets.

Since the snow-fall has been a little bit rare this year we are concerned about the snow conditions in the area: quantity, transform-grade, avalanche risk, etc... Specially concerned about the state of ridges (clean of snow or not) on Dent Blanche (south ridge), Lagginhorn (north), normal to Matternhorn, and the Breithorn ridge...

Could anyone help us with fresh information? Also gear advice is welcome!
Thanks in advance!! :D

Hi John,
I am going to be there at the end of next week (starting Friday).
It'd be great to share conditions info, plus we could get a beer.

Finally, I'd loove to have a partner for a glacier tour. If you guys will be there I'll carry the ropes if I can join you on Weisshorn or some such.

Anyway, my impression is that snow isn't melting fast, just looking at webcams:

And here are the most recent logged trips in the Wallis:

Looks like it would be good to bring your skis.

Michael, great that we will be there at the same time. I'll send you a PM with my mobiele telephone.

About climbing together,...it all depends of my climbing partners and of the plans itself...how things are happening...
w'll see.

We will go up with snowshoes. Our skills in non-treated snow are not yet good enough for descending those slopes with crevasses...

keep in touch,

Jon
