Which familly tent for standard camping into mountains ?

by visentin » Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:31 pm

Hi,
I'm looking forward to buy during the off-sales of this year's season a small familly tent that could fit 3 people - my wife and me, our 3 years old son (but rather a 4 places sized, as we usually have lots of stuff, and we already own a small 2-persons). We are looking forward to camp into campsites like most people, but not always at the sea-side, the idea would be to make it a mountain accommodation when we go here and there. Considering the weather that can occur in mountains we care about the tent being of good quality and waterproof, which is why we wouldn't buy it first price in shops like Decathlon. As a comparison I have a small bivouac Coleman Cobra whose waterproof-ness never betrayed us, neither resistance against wind. But it doesn't have to be Coleman even if I saw already Coleman makes the kind of tent I'm looking for. That would also be something easy to mount and dismount as we tend to often change our location. The weight isn't that important as it would travel mostly in the car (perhaps once or twice by bike), but the size when packed yes, our car isn't big. As for size when mounted, should be a tent in which we can stand in. We wouldn't buy the most expensive as we have budget constraints like many people do, so we are looking for the best choice regarding quality and price.
I don't expect to know at once the miracle product, but I'm looking forward to read here what SPers are using, and have a better idea of what we need and can afford.
Thanks !
Eric

Jack Wolfskin Pyramid Tarp XT. That is what I use for my family - three kids age 1 to 5. Good ventilation, windproof, easy and fast setup and a lot of space - that's what you need with kids! They do have even a somewhat smaller version.

Thanks !
That looks like a nice one but it seems that Wolfskin tents are not very commonly sold in Poland where I live (I usually check the auctions site Allegro to make myself an idea of the price). Just had a look at the Colemans, I like the "Lakeside 4", and Coastline 4 too despite without the door shelter.

For the money I think it's hard to beat Eureka Tents for a high quality family tent of just about any size and application. Lots and lots to choose from. Check out Campmor for some deals...

I think the Timberline series might be a real good fit for you: http://store.eurekatent.com/timberline-4-tent

Found also the Hi-Tec series :

No idea if Hi-Tec is a good brand.

Vango and Fjord Nansen don't look bad too...

This Kelty is a nice tent, nice price and pretty roomie. My wife, 16 year old son and I slept 1 night in it and seemed to be big enough for the 3 of us. Pretty lightweight too.
