Pine Island Run Falls

Pine Island Run Falls

This was the most exciting and treacherous part of my brother's and my excursion to Pine Island Ledge on the coldest day of the year. After descending the ledge, which meant being exposed to powerful and bone-chilling winds, we had to ascend past a series of waterfalls. Here, the first and largest waterfall, is pictured along Pine Island Run. With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees we did not want to step into the water so we had to climb over ice encrusted rocks on the edge of the stream. This took extreme caution and meant we had to move awkwardly around some rocks to continue upward. However, it was a fun experience, since a couple months before I had come here and there was hardly a drop of water running over the falls. (December 22, 2008)
