What's the Point? That looks like it should have a name.

Re: What's the Point?Yeah I know. There is no name on the USGS map, only an elevation. After the hike, my friend who was with me looked into the requirements for naming a natural feature. He also called the park and a 35+ year employee did not know of any official or unofficial name for the peak. He also said that any thing in a wilderness area not already having a name was not allowed to be given a name. This area had been a wilderness study area but was never officially made wilderness, so it could be named.

It CountsWell, at least it has a number. Many of my favorite peaks just have numbers.

Re: It always CountsI knew this would turn political sooner or later ... numbers are good !
My name would be: "Upside down Face with Protruding Chin."

Most of the peaks in the area don't have a name, including many that are even steeper and more rugged than this one.
I've just referred to the above peak as "Sage Creek Peak", but the name is not official. It's still a very nice looking peak.
Here's another photograph of it from a different angle:
6917
Here are a few more of the un-named ones:

This one is my favorite:

Re: Really CoolYes, it's a very interesting area with 2000'+ drops to the Green River. The other side of the Green River, a few miles down stream has some very gnarly peaks.

Glad I'm not in Nebraska. Best of luck, Judy!
