Ptarmigan Traverse country

Ptarmigan Traverse country

Looking south from a camp on the Eldorado Glacier. Prominent summits from left to right: Spider Mountain, Johannesberg, Formidable (sort of hidden behind J-berg), Dome Peak, One-eyed Bull & Spire, and Glacier Peak. The deep dark vast gorge at lower right is the South Cascade River canyon, a fine example of a North Cascades wilderness valley. The old trail that goes up this valley through “Box Canyon” and on to the South Cascade Glacier is tough to follow but very much worth the effort, if you have a taste for virgin old-growth, waterfalls, self-reliant navigation, and considerable suffering.

I second that.

I agree about the South Cascade trail. It's not on the maps, and I didn't know it existed until I was sent up there on a rescue for some guys below Formidable. You can reach South Cascade Lake and return in a day hike, but the destination is less interesting than the trip. Look behind you and remember the location where the trail leaves the forest up high.
