Red Mountain #1 viewed from the south, from the slope of Red Mountain #2. Corkscrew Pass 4 wheel drive road can be seen coming down the west side of the notch slope between Red Mountain #1 and Red Mountain #2. The road is an easy one, accessible from either north of Silverton (county road 110 to county road 10 to west on forest service road 886), or just north of the huge tailings pile now covered with dark rock, at the south end of Ironton Park, about 10 miles south of Ouray (east on Forest Service Road 886). Hiking the crests of the Red mountains is pleasant. Most flat landers never get out of their rented jeeps to really enjoy the area, so you can enjoy your hiking and the gorgeous scenery in solitude.
