How nasty?

would Rolling be from Lake Hope approach? Am I way off?

I don't think it would be that bad, the ridge up Rolling from the "V9" saddle is fine, and the slopes down to the Lake Hope side just looks like some loose scree but not all that steep.

EDIT: Sorry, just to clarify, the slopes from Lake Hope go to the "V8"/"V9" saddle, you have to go over "V9" to get to Rolling from Lake Hope.

so would you think it worth trying a different route from Hope Lake or recommend the stadard South Mineral / South Park approach? Thanks!'

I think you could go from Hope Lake and it would be a reasonable route. You just have to make sure weather is good enough to go back over "V9" or you would be trapped in the wrong basin.

I climbed Rolling from South Mineral then went over "V9" and descended back to South Mineral from the "V9"/"V8" saddle, so basically I did the entire "off trail" part of a Lake Hope route. There is some 2+ loose San Juan scree to deal with, but nothing too nasty. The ridge on "V9" was cairned.
