This trip was for Denali preparation. Pulled 70+ pound sleds up to ~9200', just north of the saddle. Weather changed over night and we got to spend a day digging out the tents every hour and battling 2+ feet of snow with 30-80 mph winds. Woke the next day to a sunny sky accompanied by a successful summit filled with the boom of the Kirkwood avalanche cannon!
I climbed this one a few times when I was a kid, with my grandparents. We always had perfect solitude back then.
Great hike with awesome views up top. A bit of a butt-kicker in terms of endurance but a great workout. Bouldering required up top, a bit dicey.
Nice early morning summit. Great views from the top.
I climbed this solo the first time, then with my husband the second time. As usual, lots 'o loose rock but a fabulous view from the summit!
Skied from Carson Pass to the saddle below the west ridge. Climbed the ridge and traversed over to the east summit. A truly alpine experience with all the fresh snow, high wind and icy temperature.
Nice hike up the west ridge to the western summit. Slight haze in the air. Great views of Summit City Canyon and areas south.
Light from setting sun on Round Top was awesome on the descent. Hiking/running on section of trail between Carson Pass and Winnemucca Lake in the setting sun is always a glorious experience.
Total time to hike from Carson Pass to top and back: 2 hrs 50 min. Great way to start the weekend.
Some snow but firm in the morning. Reached the top around noon and spent an hour taking in the sights. On the downclimb, boot skied about 800 vertical feet down the large patches of snow. I'm going to bring my son and daughter next time.
Jim ("the Schillermon") Schiller left this world a sadder place on December 3, 2004. Eight of us were present to share our memories and scatter his ashes in a place he loved. We'll miss you brother, your spirit and music live on.
Recovery climb - ankle works ok, although hurts somewhat. Climbing steep snow was easier than scrambling on the rock on the ridge...
Very calm, clear day. Wildflower explosion down around Winnemucca Lake.
Climbed with Andre and Marta. Ideal snow conditions, no ice encountered in right hand chute. Exit onto west summit while steep was not too difficult. Winds raged on top, crawled across summit to gain west ridge descent. Very windy but otherwise a beautiful day in the mountains with good friends.
Me my girlfriend and our dog(Ginger) snowshoed up the North Face to the saddle between Round Top and the Sisters. I then threw on my crampons and grabed my ice axe and went the rest of the way to the Summit. It was a beautiful day, all sun and very little wind. The snow was very wind blown with sections of ice.
Nice climb for me and, my girlfriend, and our dog(Ginger). I was really shocked at how many people where in the Carson Pass area. I felt like I was in an amusement park. I will have to come back in the winter and try the Crescent Moon Couloir. Not so many people.
Solo. Nice easy peak for a day trip from SF.
First mountaineering experience for my girlfriend. Great day with awesome views. But learned a lesson about forgetting to put on sunscreen....
Perfect snow conditions. Couldn't get up the final 6' of the left side variation because of loose snow so stuck to the right side at the top.
Started out as a hike to Round Top Lake from Woods Lake, but I convinced my 2 older friends to try the peak, couldn't get them to cross the notch to the true summit though! Great Climb.
First went up the West Ridge with Vendula. Came down and climbed up the couloir (this time the left variation) - I was sinking into snow up to my waist, snow blown into my face... pretty fun.
Since I love randonee skiing, snowshoeing and hiking, Round Top has been frequented by me in all seasons. This area has become my favorite recreation area since I live in South Lake Tahoe. It is highly used but covers such a large expanse that visitors spread out remarkably well. The knife-edge of the peak is thrilling to walk along.
