Mt Gilbert

My wife Penelope and I scrambled up this peak from Lamoille Camp, July 26, 2022. There was still snow in the bowl, we used crampons to get to the tarn. A bit of scrambling up the central gully. Wonderful Rubies view from top. Long trip for us (we are in our 70s)

Snow Lake Peak

My wife Penelope and I started from the end of the road parking lot and hiked WEST on snow covered slopes to the left edge of the peak as it appeared before us. I will post some photos of the way we went. The route was great, but not totally easy. Steep class 3 with short steps of class 4 until we hit the summit tower/pinnacle. That turned out an "old school" class 4 with technical climbing over huge exposure. We did not use rope but just so...We had a short (30m) rope with us. I thought the approach on frozen snow, with crampons and ski poles worked great. I would recommend this wonderful tower as a great trip in the beautiful area of Ruby Mountains. Class 4+ the way we went (see the drawing on the Snow Lake Peak page).

Fitzgerald Peak

My wife Penelope and I scrambled up this fine peak in late June 2019. We approached the peak from the Thomas Canyon Campground. The peak is quite visible from the CG. We followed the Thomas Canyon up, then skirted the valley to the notch between Snow Lake Peak and this Fitzgerald Peak. Once at the notch, the long ridge of the peak appeared in front of us. We hiked to the left side (looking up) of the ridge line, scrambled to the other side and climbed the wall (class 3) to the summit. The peak gets done about once a year or less. Wonderful outing in the Rubies.

Ruby Crest Trail during the 2018 fire

My wife Penelope and I hiked the trail in Sep/Oct of 2018. We got caught by the huge Lamoille Canyon 2018 fire just after we crested the first saddle above Favre Lake. After some anxious time, we decided to continue south as the return was blocked by the fire. Our truck was the only vehicle not evacuated from Road's End and it took us several days to get back to it. The truck did not burn, we were lucky.
Visiting the Lemoille Canyon again this June (2019) the burned out area will take years to come back and restore the incredible beauty of this Canyon.

Ruby Dome and Ruby Pyramid. This is a lovely range once you get above cattle country.

My favorite place for hiking.

Made a trip to North Furlong Lake. Seemed a bit long and strenuous at the time due to my terrible smoking habit that I quit a few months ago. I made a trip to Griswold Lake sometime in June of 2013. Easy and beautiful especially through the aspen trees until I reached the last 1/4 of a mile and did some decent class 2 scrambling over massive boulders and lost my footing a few times. I reached Verdi Lake the day before my trip to Griswold. I went straight up the mountain from the Terraces Picnic area with some difficult class 2 and 3 in some places to reach the lake. Very strenuous and difficult. I went for a short hike on the Lamoille-Talbot trail last week with a few buddies. I found it particularly easy but was turned back because of ice and snow near the top and didn't have crampons. Planning to reach most of the peaks and all of the lakes this summer as well as complete the Ruby Crest Trail a few times!

Lamoille Canyon south on the crest and back again. Absolutely stunning.
