Saintgrizzly, Needle Mountains, 1978

Saintgrizzly, Needle Mountains, 1978

We reunited in 1981. Sporting a big beard, Vern and his friend Randy came down from Lander and joined me in Ouray. Together we made our first excursion into the Needles via the Silverton Railroad, a “fad” that would later be discovered and heavily exploited by the masses of peakbaggers to follow in the coming decades. We had set out to climb three mountains in the area, among Colorado’s highest. We had no idea at the time that we were climbing “fourteeners” before there was such a term. Ever the solitary explorer, Vern would continue his studies in Oslow, Norway throughout most of the 1980s. Digital scan of a 35mm photo. Photo by Aaron Johnson

Vern

I am curious about Vern's other interests; what did he study?

Thank you for these wonderful insights into your friend's life, Harlen.

Re: Vern

While he had a number of relationships throughout his life, Vern was never insecure enough to be uncomfortable as "the loner," so such matters did not deflect him from what you chose to do. Studying photographt was a passion. His was also a very good writer, as evidenced in his work here at SP. He also loved classical music and opera and he would spend hours just sitting and listening. He also liked rock and roll, particularly The Who, Yes and ELP. So often we would listen to music together, especially on long trips enroute to a mountain objective, usually over night, in one of our jeeps. I miss him. Thanks for stopping by and posting your comment.
