Saintgrizzly, Swatch Range, 1997

Vern pauses atop the sprawling summit of Mount Hope in Colorado’s Sawatch Range after he and I finally caught up to his girlfriend (who’s name I now fail to recall). She shot up the mountain at lightning speed. She showed us up physically, but it did not quell Vern’s anger. She was not interested in his insistence that the group remain together and rebelliously struck out on her own, leaving us no clue as to her whereabouts until we found her on the summit. This was one of several stormy relationships Vern had with women. He seemed more content to live life on his own, though I’m sure he would have been very glad to have the right companion to share his life.

thanks Aaron

Thank you for posting this page even though the message is not a happy one. I did not know Vern, but I enjoyed so much, his pages, especially those about GNP. A question please....Was there a similar occurrence on Mt. Ouray as the one above on Hope with one of the climbing party leaving the group and causing worry, etc. I remember a trip report about this , but cannot find it now. Seems to have involved a wife or girlfriend not staying with the group. Thanks. Charles Baxter

Re: thanks Aaron

Charles-You have a god memory! Yes, my friend Mark (who appears in some of the photos in this TR) girlfriend at the time (soon to be wife) split from the group duting a thunderstorm on Mt. Ouray. That particular TR was part of a series covering horrific storms I have experienced over the years. The series was deleted from SP shortly before my departure from service on the SP staff. Fortunately we had great weather on Mount Hope.
