Packed in from Humber Park on the Devil's Slide Trail and set up camp at Round Valley the previous day. Today, we climbed San Jacinto Peak, headed south to a saddle and up to Jean Peak, and then came back across the same saddle and northeast to Miller Peak.

Went to summit via tram. Hardly any snow at all and very little ice. No need for snowshoes or crampons.

Our group took the tram to the top to find the snow cover plentiful. So we put on our snowshoes and headed out. We reached the summit in just under 5 hours. It snowed on us all day and this added to the beauty and adventure. We got back to the tram before 5 pm.

My partner and I were psyched for a short-ish hike after the 23 mile San Gorgonio trek the day before, but we underestimated this mountain! The weather was great for the trip, but we lost the trail near the top because of a deep layer of snow. So we ended up bushwhacking straight up the final approach to the top and we were so totally exhausted by the time we summited that we laid down on the summit rocks and took a nap. A somewhat frustrating experience, but I would do Jacinto again... just not the day after Gorgonio!

The postcard from the state park visitor center states San Jacinto is one of North America's highest peaks. This is a real trophy.

Route Climbed: Snow Creek Date Climbed: 12/20/05  Sucess!

Incredible scramble up a gully with huge rock walls on both sides. Started at 5:00am without a headlamp (due to the private property issues) and topped out 7hrs. later. Decided to take the tram down.

Climbed with my best friend Jake. The summit had one of the coldest winds I have ever felt blowing over the top of it.

Great day for hiking. I left the museum at 4AM, about half way up Pep caught up to me. We reached Long Valley at 10:30 and made the summit at 1:45. No snow on trail, but a few patches off trail. We took the tram down $10, then a taxi back to the museum $21+ change. About 12.5 hours from car to summit to tram.

My son Jeremy (Montpelier VT) and I (Atlanta) bagged it in a bit over 4 hour roundtrip from Tram thru Round Valley. Spectacular day, vivid contrast among the boulders, pine trees, snow and blue sky! Some haze prevented maximum views from the peak. Short celebration at the lodge--a beer--and back down via Tram. We'll be back!

Initiallty i thought the trail was only 8 miles round trip. within a few minutes of the hike i discovered that the trail was actually 11.5 miles long. I had a slight cold, my sinuses were killing me, and i didnt think i was going to make it. However, by the time i reached round valley i wasa in great shape. Me and my friend made it to the summit and back to the tram witihin 5 hours. The summit views were amazingly clear for southern California.

T-Bone and I set out from the Desert Museum parking lot at 4:52 am, reached the tram station 5 1/2 hours later, reaching the peak at 12:52 pm. We were graced by the company of our ladies 1 mile before the peak so that they could celebrate our accomplishment at the summit. The entire hike was truly a unique experience that I will repeat again. Beginning in the dark, watching sunrise over the Coachella Valley, hiking throught the various biomes, and finally celebratory libations at the tram tavern made for a unique outdoor adventure. The sweat, training, and 10 1/2 hours of my life to complete the adventure was worth every second.

12 of us from the Sierra Club reached the summit in 12 hours starting at midnight in Palm Springs. The elevation gain was 10,500 ft in 16 miles plus five more back to the tram station. The wind on top was ferocious.

From Snow Creek with thousands of feet of neve, from Black Canyon camp as day hikes, from Humber Park /Devil's Slide trail as day hikes, from the tram. Once, in winter, when there was actually snow in the plams of the town of Banning, we had a wonderful powder day off the summit.
