Only saw 2 people on this trail until we reached the junction with the tram trail. Great views of palm springs.

Devil's Slide Trail

In the spring of 1984 I hiked to the summit on the Deer Springs Trail with my Chemistry/Climbing instructor and some fellow high school students. In the fall of 1984 we hiked it again from Devil's Slide Trail. I'd like to go back there soon and hike up it again. I really love this area.

main trail

one of the most dissapointing trips for me, started from the museum but had to turn back at around 5000' because of severe cramps and dehydration. the top of the tram still seemed like zillions of miles away, which i wasnt physically or mentally prepared to make. Someday, maybe far into the future, will i conquer the beast. As of now, i got to practice and get in shape for it.

Devil's Slide from Humber Park: 29 May 2006  Sucess!

Absolutely perfect conditions this Memorial Day. Summited in about 4 hours and had the added bonus of jabbing it up with a guy telling me I was wearing the wrong shoes. Added the fun scramble up Miller Peak. Despite the long trip from San Diego, well worth the day trip and need to spend more time up here for sure.

Snow Creek

Dayhiked Snow Creek with Rick Graham. Lots of brush, lots of scrambling, still plenty of snow. This route has it all. Quite a day.

I thought I signed this!  Sucess!

I thought I would have signed this register already, mainly because it is my favorite mountain! Did it only three times so far. Love this mountain.

Snow Creek  Sucess!

3rd time up for me on Snow Creek. Climbed with mdostby (Mike). We did the ascent over 2 days. Saturday 4/22/06 was the approach to our 5,900 feet camp. Next day we started up at ~ 6:30am. I waited an hour for Mike to come up to the 8,300 feet fork. Decided to take the Side Finish variation. I found good conditions (good neve) this time around. I summited at 12:03pm and waited for Mike there who summited by 2:30pm. Caught the tram down ($10) and then took a taxi ride from ClassicCab back to Snow Creek ($40). Except for the Bushwack section, I always enjoy this local alpine climb.

Snow Creek  Sucess!

Incrediable and exhausting climb of Snow Creek. Climbed with partner Miguel Forjan in near perfect conditions. A little soft near the top and on the hike out to the tram. Did the "side finish" variation. I have a renewed respect for San Jacinto after completing this route.

awesome camp at Strawberry Junction  Sucess!

We spent Labor Day weekend up on Jacinto. Camped at Strawberry Junction and the sunset views were incredible. Spent a while at the summit napping (feeling a little altitude sick too) and lusted for San Gorgonio, which seemed within throwing distance.

Don't Cut Switchbacks!  Sucess!

A beautiful hike from the tram station to San Jacinto Peak. Unfortunately, the 2004-05 snow season ended so late that we trudged through knee-deep soft-pack to get to the top. And snow wipes out switchbacks, meaning out trail disappeared several times and we had to free climb to get there, eventually ending up on the back side and spending several hours trying to find our way back.

We couldn't, and ended up walking down into Little Round Valley, and then bivouacking on a ridgeline south of Jean Peak for the night. We weren't packed for an overnight, but I learned that anything makes good tinder that night: paper, extra first aid supplies, and even the pockets of your clothing can be cut to stoke the fire (it didn't help that we had to build on snow).

An adventure, to be sure, worth remembering more than reliving, but certainly worth having!

Bagged With My Boy Scout Troop

Summited this while in Boy Scouts back in the early 60s (date climbed entry is estimated). We hiked the long way around from Idyllwild, logging 23 miles over an extended weekend. Afterward they gave us an award called "The Order of the Lead Balloon".

Packed in from Humber Park on the Devil's Slide Trail and set up camp at Round Valley the previous day. Today, we climbed San Jacinto Peak, headed south to a saddle and up to Jean Peak, and then came back across the same saddle and northeast to Miller Peak.

Our group took the tram to the top to find the snow cover plentiful. So we put on our snowshoes and headed out. We reached the summit in just under 5 hours. It snowed on us all day and this added to the beauty and adventure. We got back to the tram before 5 pm.

Route Climbed: Devil's Slide Trail Date Climbed: 5/31/05  Sucess!

My partner and I were psyched for a short-ish hike after the 23 mile San Gorgonio trek the day before, but we underestimated this mountain! The weather was great for the trip, but we lost the trail near the top because of a deep layer of snow. So we ended up bushwhacking straight up the final approach to the top and we were so totally exhausted by the time we summited that we laid down on the summit rocks and took a nap. A somewhat frustrating experience, but I would do Jacinto again... just not the day after Gorgonio!
