Re: Where?It's 10 miles up the Payetter River above Grandjean at the top of the gulley to the left of what we called the Kong. There are many of these spires, some in the range of 200'-300' with the most beautiful dihedrals you've ever seen. Over the ridge in the Goat Creek drainage there must be 50 or more of these towers. Fred Becky climbed in this area for a few years but I don't know if he published much about what he did. That's Peak 9785 behind the spire. It sits above Limber Lake and west of Reward Peak.

Re: Where?We didn't have cams back in the 70s which would be very handy for some of the perfectly parallel sided cracks. Carrying 10 pieces of the same size hex or stopper up there was just not practical.

Long WayThat's a long way to haul heavy gear, especially if light and fast is the mindset. I've been up to Cony Peak in a day and that seemed really far. "Garden Creek Peak" just to the south was impressive. The Goat Creek drainage is spectacular, but with lots of dead fall it's a tough cross country trek.

Re: Long Way60-70 lbs or more was the norm for our full approach packs. Nothing was "lite" weight back then. We would set a camp in the valley and then do day climbs from there. We also ran into bears more than once on our trips up there. One encounter is a whole story in itself. We considered using the horse packing service out of Grandjean but never did.
