Shastina Suddenly Appears as Clouds Recede

Shastina Suddenly Appears as Clouds Recede

Here I was just beginning my descent from Shasta, still clueless about the difficulties that lay ahead. Snow would be too soft to glicade. I would sink with every step up to my waist. I would hallucinate and talk to myself for long periods of time. I would return to the car utterly broken, humbled by the mountain I had just climbed, at 10 pm, some 17 hours after setting off. It was and still remains my hardest day in the mountains ever. Shasta. California. June 4, 2005. 6 pm.

Impressive mountain !

If another person wanted to climb
this mountain, what route would you
suggest to them? From all indications,
the mountain's glaciers appear to
be growing, and seem to be healthy.
Did you have to manuver around
some crevasses? Thank you very much!

Re: Impressive mountain !

Thanks again for your comments!
If you want to climb Shasta I would recommend Casaval or Green Butte-Sargent routes. No crevasses at all if you stay on route! Since you have been on Rainier, you will find no problems here. My mistakes were: doing it in one day, starting late, not turning back in time.
