Easy climbing  Sucess!

I summited this peak with my fellow crew mates of the Wildhorse Trail Crew. This route is mostly hiking; chicken out was fun and could've been made as hard as you wanted it to be, but there was always an easy way around everything that was never harder than class 2. It was a blast of course and getting down at sunset, just before an enormous thunderstorm added to the tremendous experience.

heatwave in may  Sucess!

I solo'd the sw ridge route on this blazing friday; crazy temperatures for a may day. I had the mountain to myself and enjoyed the solitude plus 2 quiet nights at the trailhead parking and camping area.
Conditions were moderate in the morning, with the snow being firm along the ridge to the summit. I sat on the summit, with little or no wind, and watched cornices and avalanches break off around me. Conditions became poor in the afternoon, and the descent was quite tedious. There still was a lot of snow up there but it was melting fast! Lots of balling in the crampons and lack of trust along the snow knife edge / arete sections.

I Love Idaho Mountains  Sucess!

I first climbed Borah Peak in 1997 when I took my brother up there for his bachelor party. I returned to the mountain on Labor Day Weekend 2007, there was about 25 people on the mountain that Sunday. Hard to find state high-points with that easy of access and that few people.

Chicken Out  Sucess!

Chicken out ridge was fun. Shared the mountain with just one other climber that day.

Chicken Out Ridge: not all it's cracked up to be  Sucess!

"Chicken Out Ridge" disappointed me. We waited 45 minutes to gain the entrance to the ridge due to a large bottleneck of people who were obviously contemplating chickening out. At this point we thought that the ridge must be pretty gnarly if all those people were backing off (they were not descending). Once we gained the entrance to the ridge, it was a piece of cake. Taking the trail on the north face of the ridge allowed us to bypass at least 20 people who were struggling on the south side. I'm still wondering what I got all psyched out about, hoping that it might be difficult, but I guess each person's level of comfort is different. 5.5 hours to the top (including that 45 minute wait at Chicken Out Ridge), 2 hours to get down. Great views, nice hike.

We Didn't "Chicken Out"...  Sucess!

A friend & I completed a successful first attempt of Borah Peak via the "Chicken Out Ridge" route. The weather conditions were great, which I believe really helped our climb. Before this hike neither of us had any true scrambling experience, which made this hike more intense (for our limited climbing experience, that is) than we had envisioned. With that said, and despite other hikers turning around, we had few difficulties. When crossing the ridge, we found ourselves taking different paths during our ascent & descent. Portions of the route might be difficult, but people of all shapes, sizes, and ages were traversing the route. We even saw one dog complete the ridge section, although the owner said "never again" because of the difficulty.

Twice in one day  Sucess!

Climbed this with my Dad. He took a break at Chicken Out ridge while I summited. I then collected him on the descent and up we went for my second time on the summit.

Great route  Sucess!

I really enjoyed this route. Chicken Out Ridge was a lot of fun. The only negative was grinding out the on-trail portion of the descent.

Chicken Out?  Sucess!

It was awesome, especially going up. Once I got back into the trees my toes and knees really started hurting. Chicken out Ridge was tight.
