Squirrel Corn

Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis)is a funny name, and I don't know the story behind it. It has a wide distribution in the Midwest, New England, and the Atlantic states--though it's endangered or threatened in many of the East Coast states. The mountains along the North Carolina-Tennessee border are the southernmost part of its range, presumably because the higher elevations provide the cooler woods that it likes. This was spotted above Tremont in the Smokies, April 2010.
