One of the Best Ever

This fresh reading of the classic theme of glacier travel features masterly composition, soft light, and great colors. One of the best pictures I have ever seen on SP. Would you tell us something of how you took it? Thanks!

Thanks! Let me try to explain the conditions on the mountain when I took this picture. It was quite fussy in my head up there due to the altitude (about 5700m). This is why we took a 15 minutes break and had some time to look around, while the sun came up.

Actually, sunrise is one of the best moments to make pictures on the glacier. I waited until there was a enough light for the picture. When the next group came through the crevasse zone, I took two pictures (this one was the best of the two)

The overhanging ice-wall provided a good foreground. The light was captured using the right white balance for such conditions (which can be manually controlled on my nikon 4500). At home I gave it a slightly higher contrast (5%) in photoshop.

Well, a short break at sunrise is always full of surprises ! (I don't mind to be the last on the summit).

It is not really the histogram I look at. It is more or less the influence of red and blue in the picture (color temperature). Automatic white balance often gives too little red under cloudy or dark conditions. Most upper-end digital cameras have manual controls to choose between night scene, shade, overcast, and sun etc. Before I had the digital camera I used 'warm' or 'cool' film depending on the weather I expected.

Excellent!

Even without the climbers in the photo, it would've been a great shot. With the climbers, I agree with one of the other voters that proposed it is a strong contender for being the potw.

Awesome

I love the color of this shot... combined with the icicles hanging of the crevasse lip it really conveys the coldness of the mountain. Really nice photo, great job!
