Sunwapta Left Hand #1

Sunwapta Left Hand #1

Greg, starting into the business on the first pitch of the grade 4 ice climb located in Sunwapta Left Drainage (Jasper National Park, Alberta Canada). It's actually as steep as it looks. (climber: G. Cutforth, photo: A. Jones)

Re: looks like

Yea, and the guidebook calls it grade 3 (and has a picture of it). The locals all know of this pitch - it's solid grade 4 and spits off or scares away a few people every year. The ice is typically not good until you get about 2/3 of the way up it. The second pitch however, is usually stellar.

Re: looks like

Yeah it looks dead vertical, eg. harder than Carlsberg, which is grade 5... :)

Re: Awesome

Thanks! I like this picture too. It's sometimes nice to climb with three people as then I can scurry around and find some nice angles for photos - instead of the bum shot all the time.
