The battle for the highest
Lomnicky stit (2633 m) crowned by clouds, seen from the summit of Jahnaci stit (2229 m).
The question of the highest peak of Tatras was not resolved until 1838, when Ludovit Greiner summited Lomnicky stit and measured other high peaks from its top.
Till then, some peaks were believed to be the highest. People of region Liptov believed Krivan was the highest, polish Gorals favorited Ladovy stit and people from region Spis believed Lomnicky stit to be the highest. Noone favorited Gerlachovsky stit, actual king of Tatras. British observer Robert Townson measured it less objectively in 1793 and wrote that Lomnicky stit was the highest. He helped Spis legend to stay alive long after 1838.
