Is this the top of the Giant Staircase? Please clarify. I was only able to find suitable hand holds by being pulled up by the rope from above. It is definitely harder than the Fresh Air Traverse or the Tower Traverse.

Giant staircaseYes, this is the last steep bit before it turns 3rd class. I've heard you can go around this section to the climber's right and it is easier. Haven't tried it.

ha!"soft person" my a$$! Anyone who is unroped at that point wearing a hat is a hardman in my book (not to mention all the other stuff you've done!). I thought that was pretty stiff for a 5.'6' too. I love the trademark orange shirt too! Great route anyway, sandbagged or not. Drove through your neck of the woods yesterday on the way back from Whitney, as a matter of fact. We'll have to meet up one of these days.

Re: ha!How was Whitney? Yeah, it'd be cool to meet up and climb something, you seem to get out quite a bit yourself. Next time you're out this way or in the Yosemite area, let me know. That East Face is a fun route, this summer I want to try a link-up of that and the Fishhook in a day c-t-c. So many things to do, only so much time...

Re: ha!Whitney was fun- we were the only ones on the E Butt, a really fun route!
There was a party from Boulder who did the E Butt & the lower Fishhook c-t-c (the one guy came up from the Fishhook descent to summit after they bailed at the notch) when Gordon & I did the Fishhook a few years ago (in 3 days, approach-climb-descend- & I didn't think we were moving slow!). Truly a hardman's objective (don't think I have the initiative for that...)! Will let you know next time I have plans to be in your area. Thanks for the invite, Barry.
