The Gfallwand WNW ridge

The Gfallwand WNW ridge

Seen from high in the Lafaistal, just below the Ginggljoch, the saddle on the right. Left of center is a only false summit. The true Gfallwand summit is a big plateau, the edge of which is just visible on the far left here. From here, there are two relatively easy ways up: Starting at the Ginggljoch, follow the WNW ridge. There is no trail, and it takes a bit of scrambling, UIAA grade I. The section just left of the false summit is the crux, and it's pretty exposed. If the snow is firm, a good alternative is to head up directly, and aim for a point high on the ridge, just west of the summit (i.e. to the right). I didn't know all this yet when I took this picture. I just planned to try the WNW ridge, and see how that would go. The scrambling proved to be easy enough, but the exposure made an impression. Therefore I decided to descend the snow slope instead. It wasn't firm, so it would have been hard work to get up there, but as a descent route it was easy. 16 July 2013.
