The hut warden at the Rieserferner Hütte speaks

A few years ago, an article about a hiking tour in the Rieserferner Group had been published in a popuplar (German lauguage) outdoor magazine, and it had resulted in a big increase in visitors to the area. I didn't know about it until just a few days ago, when I came across that article in the Kasseler Hütte, which is not far north of here. Among other things, the article describes a fine route from the Rieserferner Hütte to the Kasseler Hütte, traversing Schneebiger Nock in the process. The writing style is engaging, but unfortunately it suggests that this route can be done by hikers and that's downright dangerous! The hut warden of the Rieserferner Hütte knows all this, and so, every evening, he gives a detailed explanation of the route as well as the alternatives to all that are interested, and strongly advises all that do not have sufficient experience not to climb Schneebiger Nock. A good alternative that requires no climbing is to traverse Magerstein instead, and most people do that. And for those that are too inexperienced for that, or when the weather is too poor, then the two main alternatives are to either descend some 1000 m towards the Antholtzer valley to the southeast (that's not all the way down) and ascend some 1000 m again to cross the Antholzer Scharte (2814m), or, generally staying much lower, descend almost 1400 m down to the Rein Valley towards the northwest and come up to the Kasseler Hütte via Rein in Taufers. That's a big detour though. I've already been to the Kasseler Hütte, and traversed Magerstein and Schneebiger Nock as a day trip from there. Still, I was curious as to what he was explaining, and I think he did a fine job informing everybody, and in the process prevented several mountain rescue operations. Finally, on a completely different note: the mountain in the background is Schwarze Wand (3105m). That's my goal for tomorrow. 4 August 2014.
