Thorong Ri attempt

Unguided climb. Very bad weather as we were hiking up the Marsayandi valley. Fresh snow as low as 3000 m. We left Thorong Phedi at 3 a.m. & reached Thorong La around 8 a.m. Very bad conditions: approx. 1,5 m of fresh snow, no tracks at all, -18° C.
The attempt to climb Thorong Ri was abandoned about 2,30 hours above the pass because of severe avanlanche risk.
While descending towards Muktinath we found the bodies of two porters at approx. 15 min. below Thorong pass. Apparently they had perished while caught in a snowstorm, a couple of days earlier.

normal route  Sucess!

It was a guided tour with a german organization. We started from the camp in the valley beneath Thorong Phedi (ca. 4350 m) at 3,30 a.m. and walked through the night until we reached Thorong La at 7 a.m. We made a rest and started again at 9,30 a.m. It was a great pleasure to feel crampons at the feet after two weeks of trekking but I was very exhausted at the summit (that we reached at 2,15 p.m.) because I had suffered with fever some days ago. Nice view to the desert of Mustang. 5 p.m. back at Thorong La where we camped the night before descending to Muktinath.
