Two photos of trichaptum biforme, each taken in Maine (at the feet of two different mountains) in September 2007.
The top photo shows a top view of an unusally colorful specimen - the tops of this species are commonly bleached white (as you can see in the lower photo). The nearly triangular shapes and bow-tie symmetry, reflected in the name of the species, are also unusually well exemplified in the top photo.
The characteristic feature of Trichaptum biforme is a purple underside, hinted at in the top photo by purple edging, and visible in the bottom photo.
