Two feet of rime ice!

Two feet of rime ice!

Climbing Mauna Kea in March was no picnic! This summit altar to Pele (supposed goddess of volcanoes) was frosted over with 1-2 feet of rime ice!! Steady winds at 30 mph made it a cool day. Sitting behind this shelter eating my lunch, it wasn't too bad though. The USGS summit benchmark is seen in the lower left hand corner of this picture.
