Pretty mellow trail up to a large flat summit. Good views of Wetterhorn and surrounding peaks. Very windy on the ridge.
Nice straightforward hike to the top. Took South slope down to Wetterhorn–fun scree slide down.
I hiked the peak on the first of a three-day road trip in Colorado. It was my third 14er, but my first experience with altitude sickness.
A friend and I arrived late on Friday night and found a decent spot to camp on a short side road away from the main road along Nellie Creek. Up early the next morning, we drove the rest of the way to the trailhead and started hiking by 6:30AM. It took five hours to get to the summit, and most of the way I was feeling fatigued, with a mild headache and a little nausea. Getting back down took 2.5 hours.
The rest of our weekend was spent driving and doing short hikes. We hit Engineer Pass on Sunday and Black Bear Pass on Monday, but unfortunately no more 14ers for me on this trip.
Solo hike. Had the summit to myself for 30 minutes. Sublime.
This is an easy one, so i made it a little more difficult. Ran the route from the start to Wetterhorn, back to back with Wet for day 2. Since there was no snow or need for crampons/ice ax, just went up light and came back fast. Up in 3.5 hours, ascending West Face via my own route, to connect with Uncompaghre Standard Route right before summit. Gorgeous crossing the Matterhorn basin, and saw barely no one. The San Juans have great climbing.
Easy really to be a 14er but then that's Colorado. I love the Ouray area, really nice. Wouldn't mind owning a get-away there.
The mountain features a relatively flat top with lots of room to take in an incredible view; on and I truly love the sheer walls.
4th of July celebration. Hardest part was getting to the trailhead :-)
Beautiful weekend in the Matterhorn Creek basin. Climbed Matterhorn Friday evening, Uncompahgre Saturday and Wetterhorn on Sunday. Good times!
Rainstorm (no lightning or thunder) was an extra challenge, but really loved this hike and the views when the clouds cleared!
Today Charlie and I climbed 14,308 ft. Uncompahgre Peak in the San Juan Range. We drove in his Jeep Wrangler on a rugged 4WD road up to the upper trailhead and camped. We hit the Nellie Creek trail around 5:30AM and made the summit around 8:45AM. Made it back to the trailhead around 11:30AM. Approx. 8 miles round trip. Had a great time on a great peak! 14er #28.
Went up Nellie Creek trail.
#1 7-4-15 What an exciting way to celebrate our nation's birth: seas of Columbine, relaxing snowfields, sweeping vistas and priceless friends. I have bin reichlich gesegnet.
Beautiful day, beautiful high alpine terrain with flowers blooming everywhere! Made it about 1/2 up the 4WD road to have a ~10 mile hike with ~3300 vert. Easy and perfect...
Climed many times starting in high school... nice long slog
Nellie Creek route in the moonlight to make it up for sunrise. Amazing views and a couple of foxes near the summit.
Mountain of many colors, beautiful hike. Views from top of this mountain are amazing. Amazing 360° views!
Via Nellie Ck. Got a lift up the road (thanks, San Diego folks) but walked down. Fun snow descent.
Hard to spell, but not to climb... but it was quite a long approach from the campsite by Matterhorn Creek. But still shorter than the approach from Nellie Creek TH.
Matterhorn Creek trail offered 12.8 miles of an easy 3,900' rise over run-out. Grassy trail has good views of nearby San Juan peaks ...kinda looks like your in the Swiss-Alps.
