west gully snow climb
climbed uncompahgre w/milburn via its southernmost west gully on a wavering may weather day. a mixed bag of snow, driving wind and calm bluebird skies had us constantly changing layers! the gully itself was a fine, fairly low-angled climb, albeit a bit tiring in the top 500' without a reprieve from kicking steps.
slipped up the nearby 13er broken hill solo afterwards before weaving my way through the snow-covered iron beds on the way out.
Hiked up Uncompahgre, followed by Wetterhorn from the Matterhorn Creek TH.

Much easier then what was expected. But then again, we also had a path to follow from a good friend who was up there 2 days previous! Great weather!!! Very atypical for January

Sweet Hike
From the Nellie Creek TH with Mountain Girl. One of my favotite 14er hikes, beautiful approach.
I did this as part of a 3 day backpack trip. It was the first 14,000 ft mountain I had been on in CO and I was shocked at the number of people on the trail. Of course it was a holiday weekend, which made it worse.
My first Colorado 14er! Had to walk from the bottom of the road since I came on a motorcycle. See my Trip Report about doing seven 14ers in eight days.
Climbed via the South Slopes from Nellie Creek. A great hike through the Uncompahgre Highlands to the rugged summit plateau. The trail was in good condition and the crowds minimal. The views of Wetterhorn Peak and the neighboring San Juan peaks were excellent.
Climbed Uncompahgre Peak from Nellie Creek TH (second time). Great weather in the morning after raining all night. Started at 5:40am and was back to the car 9:50am. Nice hike, great views.
09/05/2010: Hiked to the summit of Uncompahgre with my wife and a 5 year-old son (this is his first 14-er!) from Nellie Creek TH. Clear skies, but a little bit windy at the top. Great day in San Juans!
