Vallüla from Klein Vallüla

Vallüla from Klein Vallüla

Vallüla is my main goal of the day. If you look closely at the original version of the image, you can see the large summit cross on the top. It's 170m higher than Klein Vallüla, but what this picture doesn't show is that the saddle between the two is about 130m down from here, and the connecting ridge is quite steep on both sides of the saddle. I don't even think for a second about trying to make my way there directly. Instead, I'll descend Klein Vallüla on the right and traverse the slopes until I get to the trail leading to the normal route of Vallüla. It will pass close by the saddle, but still keeps traversing the slopes on the right hand side of the ridge. A little further, it turns left to ascend a steep couloir leading back on the ridge. I had read about the couloir in a guidebook, and a couple of days ago, while climbing Hohes Rad, I had seen that it was still full of snow. I was looking forward to that. However, the steep walls of the couloir that help to preserve the snow also hide it from view from this point. 21 July 2013.
