West view from the Eastern "summit" of
Szanda hill (just under 530 m), located in the
Cserhát hills (situated halfway in between
Mátra and
Börzsöny Mts.).
This region is not among the top hiking destinations, although being of volcanic origin, it has quite a few interesting places. One of them is Szanda, a relatively steep hill with two summits, the Eastern one bearing the ruins of a medieval fortification which was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation in the 16th century. From here you can enjoy very nice all-around view of the surrounding area. The distant range just left from the ruin on this picture is
Börzsöny.
