5.8??Hmmm, overhanging start, where is the 5.8 move? Cool formation.

Re: 5.8??The whole thing is supposed to be 5.8 OR A0........that's a sandbag that puts the Gunks to shame probably :)

best photo...of the day to be sure, very entertaining....that is some serious aid! (truck)...gear notes should read "route not compatible with convertibles"

Re: best photo...heheh :)
Thanks Dow.
Actually there was a LONG steel pole lying at the base. We later talked to some folks who used that to get the first clip but the downside was that they needed two people to get that first clip (one "pilot" for fine control of pole; one "worker" for the heavy lifting work).
Thanks for letting me use the camping info again.
cheers!

FreeNice picture, but isn't it possible to free-climb the whole stuff ? that hard ?
rpc - Nov 29, 2006 4:48 pm - Hasn't voted
Re: FreeI think it's certainly possible for others but not me. Could not see any line remotely resembling a 5.8...or a 5.9...or a 5.10 for that matter. Beyond, I can't really judge how hard it would really be.
thanks for visiting!

NiceI have a dent on the top of my truck from that move... I could never figure out how exactly the route would go at 5.8. There is a guide book someplace that says that possibly a few key holds broke off, but those would have to be some killer holds.

Re: Nice:) I agree - maybe there was a pile of scree that reached midway up the formation that somehow eroded away since that guidebook...heeheheh. Could not see a doable (for ME) line up it (nothing close).

Mexican HatWas looking through the Desert Classics book and noticed there is another similar formation called Mexcian Hat, overhanging start and short bolt ladder.

Re: Mexican HatYeah, it's in the 4-corners region couple hrs. south of Moab I think....did you read the bit about the record ascents on it? How many people could fit on its summit at any one time :)

Re: Sweet Photo!Thank you very much. This was I think the last trip for the truck down to Moab on the original transmission (probably all those long drives adding up :)
Cheers.

Re: Sweet Photo!Glad you got some extended use out of it. I just sold my car and bought a new Tacoma truck, ordered a camper shell and plan to custom build a truck camping paradise in the back. It will be so much nicer than having to set up a tent everywhere I go. Cheers!
