Approach

VIA BUTTERWORTH TRAIL:From I-93 get of Exit 24 and head east through the town of Ashland. Stay on the road and take 26 east to Holderness. At about 2 miles you will at the town center of Holderness. Make a left onto Route 113 and head roughly 12 minutes on the road. Make a right on Melcalf Road. The Butterworth Trail will be 0.7 miles on the left.

The Butterworth Trail
Trail Distance: 0.7 mile (one way)
Elevation Gain: 550 ft.


This trail climb the less popular East Rattlesnake from the east. The trail begins at gradual grade but within a couple hundred yards increases to a moderate grade. Itcontinue 0.6 miles more to the summit of East Rattlesnake. A few hundred feet more on the Ridge is a fine view from the less popular East Rattlesnake.

Essential Gear

In winter snowshoes and crampons would be highly recommended. However no technical gear is needed is summer.
