Overview

The Sweet Grass Hills are a small chain of low volcanic peaks located just south of the U.S.-Canadian border in northcentral Montana. An island range, the Sweet Grass Hills rise prominently above the Great Plains one hundred miles east of the Rocky Mountain Front and Glacier National Park. The range comprises three main landmasses: West Butte, the highest point in the range, Gold Butte, and East Butte, which contains several named summits including Mount Brown and Mount Royal.

As prominent outposts on the western Great Plains, the Sweet Grass Hills were important to the Blackfeet and other Plains Indians as hunting grounds, religious sites, and as high points from which to survey the surrounding country. From the summit of West Butte it is possible to see as far south as the Highwood Range, east to the Bears Paw Mountains, west to the Rocky Mountains, and north into Alberta. Today the Hills are a combination of private and public land, and several of its summits are approachable via BLM and state land access.

Good start :-)

Being close to home (Calgary), I have seen the Sweet Grass Hills many times form the highways, or hiking/canoeing in the Milk River valley, but have never had the chance to visit. Good start on this page, could use some information, especially a map. Thanks

Re: Good start :-)

Thanks, WB. It's definitely a placeholder for the time being. I recommend a hike of West Butte if you have the chance. It's the easiest to get to, has crazy good views, and it's the highpoint of the range. You'll be able to see a good way back into your native land from the top. Eric

Children refers to the set of objects that logically fall under a given object. For example, the Aconcagua mountain page is a child of the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits.' The Aconcagua mountain itself has many routes, photos, and trip reports as children.
