A short but beautiful visit to the Dolomites

This summer...

...mountainwise, was meager, meager for me...In July and August I was occupied with moving house from Salzburg to neighboring Freilassing on the German side of the border, so I didn't have any time to do any big hikes anyway. Then, end of August and most of the month of September, the weather was just hopelessly miserable - no question of going to the Hohe Tauern, Ötztal, Valais, Bernese Oberland or whatever. But it turned out that I had a time window of three days between September 23rd and September 26th, so I looked at the weather report for the Alps...and decided on the spur of the moment: It's time to finally do a trip to the Dolomites!
At first it seemed as if the weather report had gone wrong again - for about the um-teenth time this year, at least in my part of the world! - and I was already wondering if I should just forget taking the bus to Karersee and just get on the train in Bolzano and go back home. Thank goodness my usual "oh, what the heck - we're here now, let's go through with it"-side got the better of me! :-)
It was cloudy and cold as I went up to Paolina on the west slope of the Rosengarten group (the Italian name for this section of the Dolomites is Catinaccio). My original intention was to go to the Kölner Hut (or Rosengartenhütte) and spend the night there. But then I noticed that there was a lot of blue sky behind the other end of the Rosengarten chain, over the Val di Fassa, and thought: How about going that way instead, and possibly stay over night either at the Vajolet hut or at the Rifugio Roda di Vael (or Rotwandhütte in German)? Which proved to be sound choice that day!!

Another beautiful collection Eric!

I'm glad you got this little weather window. I also was following the (very bad) weather hoping for some luck in September. I had the impression overall that it was worse in the north and north/east - so Oberland and Dolomites - so you were lucky! I shall be writing up our trip soon - but we had poor weather in the Oberland (nevertheless still got plenty of exercise!) and then a very good week to the south, when still poor in the Oberland. bw Mark
BTW - am curious to know what camera you use?

Re: Another beautiful collection Eric!

Hi Mark and thanks a lot! I use now a Nikon D3100 SLR camera - one I'm really very happy with! :-)
Congrats again on your Strahlhorn photos - looks like a really great couple of days you had there! Sorry about your broken rib, though...!
Cheers,
Eric

Ah - I'm a Nikon man myself. Became converted in 2007 when my wife bought me a D40 - and I had 7 great years with it, until started to show signs of failing and I changed to the D3200 - which I think is the one that came after yours.
bw, Mark
