The Barrier

This volcanic accumulation feature is called The Barrier. It's what's known as a lava dam. It formed 9000 years ago when lava flows from Clinker Peak were blocked by an ice-age glacier. The partial collapse of 1855-1856 has raised some question as to whether it might collapse completely someday and release all the water of the Garabaldi Lakes. This would present a significant risk to the city of Squamish. Camping or residing anywhere directly below The Barrier is prohibited. Photographed June 25th, 2015.
